Mellon The Digital Set adalah sebuah usaha kecil dan sederhana untuk mengumpulkan, saling berbagi, dan mendokumentasikan karya-karya menawan yang berserakan disekitar kita, baik berupa lagu, karya grafis maupun lainnya. Setelah Mellon The Digital Set (MTDS) seri pertama dengan judul SEQUEL! telah dirilis pada Agustus 2009, kali ini seri kedua dirilis kembali di www.mellonzine.com mengusung judul SLICER!. SLICER! masih meneruskan semangat MTDS untuk mengumpulkan, berbagi dan mendokumentasikan karya-karya hebat yang bertebaran disekitar kita. Karena setiap apapun yang kedua akan otomatis membelah sesuatu menjadi dua bagian, maka MTDS kali ini disebut SLICER! Karena dengan munculnya SLICER! maka membuat ada MTDS #1 dan MTDS #2, as shitty simple as that.

SLICER! mengumpulkan band/musisi dari berbagai kota dan (kali ini) 3 negara, yaitu: Lull (Jakarta-Surabaya, Indonesia), African Air Conditioner (Surabaya), Angsa dan Serigala (Bandung), Museum of Modern Art (Bandung), Sajama Cut (Jakarta), We Only Said (Perancis) dan Lost Pilots (Swiss) yang tampil dengan masing-masing jenis musiknya. Indie rock (Lull, African Air Conditioner), Baroque Pop/Folk Pop (Angsa dan Serigala), Subdued Post Rock (We Only Said), Freaky Psychedelic Techno (Lost Pilots) dan Instrumental Post Rock (Sajama Cut).

Short Description:
Lull is an indie rock act, raw, psychedelic and a bit grunge on multi-layered guitar overdrive. We Only Said plays subdued post-rock with great song arranging and tickling drum beat. African Air Conditioner play a fine Indie Rock/alternative with rather dark soundscape. Angsa dan Serigala simply baroque pop just like Arcade Fire plays Beirut. Lost Pilots is really lost on their tune as a freaky horror psychedelic electronic tune. Museum of Modern Art is covering Sufjan Stevens in such their techno-freakiejazz-tune way. Sajama Cut plays unusually instrumental, experimental post rock with long duration in Ruzted Skullz, 1927, usually they are quite dynamic finest indie rock.

Ruang 109 adalah suatu komunitas seni yang dibentuk oleh sekelompok mahasiswa DKV ITS untuk mewarnai perkembangan seni di Surabaya. Salah satu proyek andalan ruang 109 adalah kompilasi komik. Pada Oktober 2009, ruang 109 telah menerbitkan kompilasi komik Anak Ganteng:The Movie yang mendapatkan sambutan yang hangat dari komunitas komik se-Jawa. Dalam rangka Cergamboree 2010, ruang 109 menerbitkan dua kompilasi komik sekaligus yaitu Anak Ganteng:Golden Eye dan Petualangan Anak Cantik.

Kompilasi komik Anak Cantik melibatkan 13 artis wanita yang berdomisili di Surabaya (Opet, Putri Macan, Finna, Nuchan, Kaka, Qiza), Surakarta (Dilla), Yogyakarta (Pipit, Ocha), Malang (Ayu), Semarang (Lina), Jakarta (Ketrin), dan Jerman (Banon).

Proyek ini mengusung semangat copyleft, maka Petualangan Anak Cantik memakai Creative Commons the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License. Selain meliris versi digital, kami juga meliris dalam format fotokopian.

Selamat datang di kompilasi komik petualangan anak cantik! Yang menyusul dengan sangat cantiknya kegantengan yang telah ditorehkan kompilasi komik anak ganteng yang fenomenal namun tetap halal itu. Sesuai kodrat namanya yang cantik, kompilasi komik petualangan anak cantik dibuat oleh anak-anak cantik. Walaupun makna cantik disini tidak lebih karena yang namanya perempuan itu tidak mungkin ganteng dan kalau bilang jelek terlalu kasar, akhirnya dibilang sama rata, cantik semua :p

Serial cantik? Serial cantik dari elex media komputindo itu? Bukan! Ini tidak seperti itu. Karakter gemulai, langsing, mata berbinar, bibir tipis dan cerita negeri dongeng? Oh itu kan dari Gramedia. Yang ini tidak bisa ditemukan di katalog Gramedia atau Uranus sekalipun. Kompilasi komik petualangan anak cantik dirilis melalui Internet Archive (www.archive.org) mengikuti pendahulunya, dan gratis! (ongkos warnet atau pulsa tetep bayar). Terbukti para petualang cantik disini memiliki tabiat mirip-mirip dengan anak ganteng di kompilasi sebelumnya. Cerita yang kasar, meaningless, abstrak, Suroboyoan, simple hooking joke, bahkan menggambar sebuah lagu.

Tarikan garis di petualangan anak cantik lebih sederhana daripada anak ganteng, banyak komik hanya dengan garis-garis sederhana saja. Walaupun beberapa komik berisi pola-pola artistik yang bagus, lihat punya Qiza, Nuchan, Banon dan Putri Macan. Cerita yang lucu, simpel/meaningless dengan garis yang simpel juga menjadi menarik untuk dibaca, untuk ini, tengok punya Dilla, Ketrin dan Ocha. Komik-komik ganteng dan cantik ini benar-benar mengingatkan kita, bahwa yang paling penting dari sebuah seni adalah ide, kemudian bagaimana menumpahkan ide tersebut dalam karya seni. Garis-garis sederhana dengan pesan yang mengena saja sudah bisa menjadi seni yang menarik. Ide hebat dengan eksekusi tehnikal yang baik juga akan membuatnya semakin bagus. Komik buatan Banon yang menggoreskan There's a Light That
Never Goes Out dari The Smith dengan sederhana namun psychedelic, dengan ide awal yang keren tentu saja membuat komik ini menjadi bagus sekali sebagai penutup. Dan kalimat "Muka Mas-nya yang SETANDAR" menjadi sangat punchy sekali di panel terakhir komik dari Ocha.

Honestly, i got so much fun reading on anak cantik, anak ganteng dan area 031 yang sudah tercetak dengan penuh perjuangan. Rasanya harus ada yang mencetak komik-komik ini dan diedarkan secara lebih luas, terserah mau lewat jalan indie/underground atau mainstream/kerajaan Gramedia. Harus lebih banyak lagi orang yang membaca ini. Ditunggu, anak ganteng, anak cantik, kakek genit, nenek nafsu atau apapun lah namanya, kelanjutan dari kompilasi komik tergila ini! (Jay)

"Mungkin Sudah Saatnya Pusat Liturgi Gereja di Indonesia Mulai Menciptakan Lagu-Lagu Baru yang Lebih Merona dan Menggemaskan Seperti Frau Ini"

Tepat pada hari raya Natal 2008 lalu, saya secara terbuka membagikan luapan kecintaan saya terhadap Frau kepada khalayak luas melalui blog saya di dailywhatnot.com. Beberapa rangkaian kata dalam blog tersebut saya kutip dalam tulisan ini. Saat itu, lagu Mesin Penenun Hujan yang hanya direkam Lani dengan menggunakan laptopnya telah menggeser singgasana lagu Malam Kudus dalam hati saya meskipun Frau tidak menciptakannya menjadi sebuah lagu rohani. Namun alunan nadanya serasa mampu memercikkan api pada lilin-lilin yang tersebar di segala penjuru gereja di dunia. Mungkin sudah saatnya Pusat Liturgi Gereja di Indonesia mulai menciptakan lagu-lagu baru yang lebih merona dan menggemaskan seperti Frau ini.

Frau adalah Leilani Hermiasih. Anaknya biasa saja. Lani berusia 21 tahun. Lulusan SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta yang saat ini duduk di bangku Jurusan Antropologi UGM. Setelah sempat mengenyam karir di Anggisluka, mencabik bass di Essen Und Blood dan menjadi kibordis ‘tambahan’ di Southern Beach Terror, mahasiswi ini diam-diam merangkai beberapa komposisi lagu yang dimainkan dan dinyanyikan sendirian. Beberapa lagunya mengadopsi jurus maut Regina Spektor dan sisanya punya rasa lebih manis dikecap di segala cuaca dan suasana layaknya musik pop ampuh pada umumnya.

Frau muncul ditengah maraknya solois-solois perempuan muda yang leluasa memainkan alat musik sambil bersenandung menjeritkan imajinasi, perasaan atau lika-liku hidupnya didepan mikrofon dan kamera mungil yang tertanam di laptopnya. Sebuah aktivitas privat diluar rutinitas yang tak jarang tersiar di situs-situs dunia maya hingga ajakan ajaib untuk unjuk gigi diatas panggung. Sebagian lagu dalam album ini sebelumnya pernah direkam seadanya dan beredar luas di kalangan muda-mudi di Yogyakarta. Namun, tidak semua orang memiliki pendengaran yang ramah menerima rekaman ’seadanya’. Untuk itulah album ini dirilis dan disebarkan untuk dinikmati oleh khalayak yang lebih luas.

‘Starlit Carousel’ juga akan dirilis dalam keping CD oleh Cakrawala Records yang didistribusikan oleh Demajors. Versi fisik ini tentu saja dikemas eksklusif dengan kejutan yang berbeda dengan versi digital. Meskipun sosoknya lugu dan biasa saja, Frau telah siap melancarkan sebuah serangan umum 11 Maret yang kedua dengan anggun dan bersahaja. (Wok The Rock)

Dalam rangka memperingati empat tahun pertama terbentuknya Nervous Breakdown (NB), band asal timur kota Jakarta ini merilis mini album yg bertajuk "God Save The Freak", mini album ini sendiri merupakan rilisan kedua yg di rilis di Yes No Wave Music. Menyusul dari mini album Never Green yg dirilis pada 4 juni 2008. God Save The Freak juga merupakan rilisan pemanasan dari NB sebelum merilis debut album, disebut sebagai pemanasan karena semua materi yg ada di EP terbaru ini berasal dari sesi demo rekaman pertama NB yg berjudul New Dogs On The Block, yg di rekam dalam format Live recording di K - Studio (Jatiwaringin/Jakarta ).

Dibandingkan dengan Never Green EP yg bernuansa progresif dengan segala macam experimen - experimen non - hardcore punk yg kental, maka di EP terbaru ini penyajian tracklist-nya lebih ke arah jenis yg ber-cita rasa konservatif, yg artinya semua lagu di album ini menyuguhkan intensitas musik hardcore punk murni yg sarat dengan agresifitas khas singkat padat dan brutal, New Dogs On The Block sendiri hanya disebar begitu terbatas saat di publikasi pertama kali di tanggal 4 november 2007, dari tangan ke tangan dalam bentuk CD-R dengan print sampul berwarna dan di jual hanya dengan seharga 5 ribu rupiah pada segelintir orang tertentu, God Save The Freak sendiri merupakan bentuk dukungan untuk siapapun yg gigih memperjuangkan apa yg benar-benar diinginkan dalam hidup. Masih saja ngebut dengan lebih banyak sampling dari beberapa potongan lagu band-band favorit mereka, seperti usaha meleburkan 2 suasana yang berbeda, cukup secara kontras. Walau sebenarnya bukanlah hal baru sebuah band fast thrash hardcore punk bermain-main dengan sampling, mungkin dari potongan pembicaraan di sebuah film, atau potongan rekaman yang cukup sinkron dengan tema lagu, yang kebanyakan bermuatan sarkastis ataupun humor. Nervous Breakdown mencoba membuat sebuah Strawberry Cake yang diblender dengan miras disini, bisa saja. Eksekusi musik hardcore punk bersemangatkan youth crew bermental indie pop cukup menarik, rekaman ini bisa memberikan ide cukup segar kepada scene hardcore punk untuk lebih bebas mendandani rancangan audio mereka dalam satu album.

Namun vitalnya, bisa jadi rekaman di album akan lebih menarik didengar daripada penampilan panggung band itu sendiri, kecuali jika si band tidak berkeberatan membawa racikan sampling mereka keatas panggung. 6 lagu disini berjalan cepat, dengan aransemen campuran Youth Of Today dan Larm, thrash! Tapi ada baiknya ketika aransemen sedikit lebih diramu dengan pergantian part yang tidak terulang atau kekacauan kord disana-sini. Kembali lagi ke band, aransemen adalah sebuah kebutuhan akan ide dan nafsu yang bisa dibuat sedikit rumit, rumit, atau berantakan.

Tampaknya Nervous Breakdown cukup puas akan nafsu hasrat mereka di sini. Dan kurang lebih mengatakan lalu berteriak “Tidaklah harus berbaju hitam untuk datang di sebuah acara hardcore punk!” Kurang lebih itu yang mereka akan sampaikan dari sekian set materi mereka ini.

Mengedepankan Harmonisasi Vokal Ala Beach Boys Era “Surf’s Up”

Setelah 5 tahun lalu merilis album The Osaka Journals (“1 dari 5 album terbaik dekade 2000” menurut The Jakarta Post), Sajama Cut kembali dengan single terbaru mereka yang berjudul PAINTINGS/PANTINGS pada Maret 2010 ini.

Lagu berkarakter Baroque Pop ini mengedepankan harmonisasi vokal ala Beach Boys era “Surf’s Up” serta aransemen ala Van Dyke Parks di album “Song Cycle” dan Lee Hazlewood di album “Requiem For An Almost Lady” yang banyak menggunakan seksi brass seperti Terompet Perancis, String quartet, perkusi-perkusi unik, dan instrument-instrumen lain yang masih jarang digunakan oleh musisi-musisi lokal kita.

Lirik non-konvensional dan bernuansa abstrak dalam bahasa inggris yang sempurna masih menjadi ciri dari band yang beranggotakan Marcel Thee, Dion Panlima Reza, Randy Apriza Akbar, Hans Citra, Andreas Humala, dan Banu Satrio ini.

Seperti selalu, band yang memainkan jenis musik mulai dari indie rock, folk pop, elektronika, ambient, sunshine pop, dan chamber pop ini mengedepankan kedinamisan musikal mereka yang tanpa limitasi - Sekali lagi Sajama Cut bereksperimen dengan pengaruh-pengaruh musik dan seni yang baru.

PAINTINGS/PANTINGS adalah single pertama dari album ketiga Sajama Cut, MANIMAL yang akan dirilis pada akhir April 2010 melalui The Bronze Medal Records dengan distribusi dari DeMajors.

SETAN BLUES!

This recording was made during practice sessions. The songs provide good platforms for guitar exploration and thematic re-arrangements. Part of the practice is also an attempt hoping to bring 'new-interpretation' to each songs. The result, hopefully, would not stray too far from their original meaning.

But even more so, these songs have provided endless knowledge and inspiration about the blues. Not only as musical and guitar-playing knowledge, but also some understanding on what it is about.

All songs are recorded in July, 2009 in Adrian's study room, and in an apartment living room, straight to a hand-held digital recorder. Compiling this recording and releasing it as free download is an act of tribute to the musical-root that has influenced so many of today's modern music. “HENTAKKAN KAKIMU, KIBASKAN RAMBUTMU DAN ACUNGKAN SALAAAM TIGA JARIII!”



Retrospeksi dan hal-hal jadul memang selalu seru untuk dinikmati terlebih di ranah musik dan fashion. Bagi penggemar musik, hal ini dibawah sadar cukup berpengaruh. Terutama bagi penggemar musik yang mulai menelusuri jejak band masa kini yang sedang digemarinya. Fans Oasis bisa menyelam hingga Koes Plus. Begitu juga fans High On Fire mungkin bisa terjerembab ke denting piano Changes-nya Black Sabbath yang emo.

Sangkakala lahir di kampus seni yang bercokol di kabupaten Bantul pada tahun 2004 di saat gemuruh heavy metal dan saudara-saudaranya sedang merajalela. Di era inilah muncul gig yang bertajuk 'Rock Siang Bolong' yang cukup mewadahi lahirnya band-band metal 80-an seperti Saseni Bujang dan Sangkakala. Namun skala wabah ini cukup kecil.

Sangkakala adalah sekelompok mahasiswa seni rupa Bantul yang sangat menggemari band-band heavy metal dan hard rock dari Jawa Timur seperti Power Metal, Kamikaze, Red Spider, Brigade Metal serta produk-produk binaan Loggiss Records lainnya dan beriringan dengan Manowar, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sisters, Quiet Riot. Namun, astuti (baca: attitude) dan skill mereka yang nge-punk menjadikan musik yang mereka ciptakan dan mainkan berbeda dengan band idolanya. Di satu sisi mereka memperbaiki tatanan lirik lagu band idolanya yang dianggap moralis menjadi lebih urakan dan ceplas-ceplos, tapi di sisi yang lain mereka menurunkan derajat musik metal menjadi kasar. Penampilan diatas panggung dijadikan sebuah fashion show lengkap dengan pesta kembang api. Seperti halnya band-band retro pada umumnya, mereka juga menyajikan ungkapan, gaya dan perilaku yang pernah terjadi di tahun 80-an namun kadangkala diimbuhi penekanan ironisme seperti teriakan “Assalamualaikum…” di intro lagu atau poster band bertorehkan tanda tangan personil.

Pada perhelatan Jogja Biennale X kemarin, mereka menggelar Macanista Art Project yang meliputi beberapa workshop seperti hairstyling, custom costume, fans attribute (poster, flyer, banner) dan diakhiri dengan konser tunggal. Album mini ini adalah hasil rekaman konser tersebut atas prakarsa Yes No Wave Music dan 3dB Indonesia.

We Only Said adalah sebuah band dari Perancis, yang memainkan musik post rock/indie rock bernuansa gelap, dalam dan disertai progresi drum yang menggelitik indera pendengaran. Setidaknya kesan itu tertangkap melalui album pertama mereka yang tidak diberi judul ini. Beranggotakan Florian Marzano, Cedric Moutier & Mathieu Languille, Mathias Prime, Matthieu Dehoux, Pierre Marolleau mereka menyuguhkan post rock yang cukup tenang, tidak rumit namun runtut untuk dinikmati.

Tidak bersenjatakan riff-riff berdistorsi tebal, suara gitar cenderung bersih dan membangun irama bersama dentingan piano di beberapa track. Isian vokal tidak melodius, namun membisik tak terlalu jelas, membangkitkan mood shoegazing. Isian drum selalu menjadi bagian favorit saya untuk band band sejenis ini, mengingatkan saya pada rilisan +/- (Plus Minus)  di album Xs On Your Eyes. Sedikit mengingatkan saya pula pada mood yang diberikan oleh Friday  di Sitting On Anything Cold.

Sebenarnya We Only Said menurut saya menyimpan potensi musik untuk digarap kearah orkestrasi yang lebih megah, spacey namun tetap shoegaze/post rock. Eksplorasi sound gitar dan keyboard/piano mungkin bisa menjadi variasi yang menarik dari track satu ke track lainnya. Karakter sound yang lebih "analog" pada gebukan drum disertai bebunyian simbal yang crashing akan menjadikannya lebih dashyat, setidaknya dalam imajinasi saya. Hehe..

We Only Said is a band came from France, they playing post rock/indie rock music with deep, dark sound ambience and followed by tickling drum progression. At least, that's what i could said by listening to their first album, that is had no title on it. Member of the band are Florian Marzano, Cedric Moutier & Mathieu Languille, Mathias Prime, Matthieu Dehoux, Pierre Marolleau, and they deliver a well steady post rock, not too complicated, but harmonious to enjoy

Did not equiped with thick distortion guitar riffs, but came apparently clean on it. the guitar sound formed rhytm with piano on several tracks. Vocal section not melodiusly sang, but rather whispered and hummed, raised the mood of shoegazing. Drum filling in this kind of songs or bands always tend to be my favorite part, remind me of +/- (Plus Minus)  release of 2008 titled Xs On Your Eyes. Also it reminds me a bit of the ambience Friday's  had made with Sitting On Anything Cold.

Actually, IMHO, We Only Said got the potential to produce a more orchestration, spacey, but yet still a shoegaze/post rock music. Guitar and keyboard/piano sound exploration may could lead to a distinctive variance of each track. A more 'analog' sound of drum kick and punch, with crashing cymbal everywhere of it, may could make it even more deadly great. At least that's what i could found in my imagination :p Haha

Mellon The Digital Set adalah sebuah usaha kecil dan sederhana untuk mengumpulkan, saling berbagi, dan mendokumentasikan karya-karya menawan yang berserakan disekitar kita, baik berupa lagu, karya grafis maupun lainnya. Kesemuanya terkumpul dalam format digital dan disebarkan secara bebas keseluruh dunia melalui www.mellonzine.com

Dan seri pertama dari Mellon The Digital Set ini berjudul SEQUEL!. Setelah beberapa bulan yang lalu Mellon Zine sempat mengalami kevakuman tak pasti, dan oleh penulisnya (Jay) dideklarasikan secara sinis sebagai telah mati. Maka sang penulis merasa lucu jika mengasosiasikan "mati"nya Mellon Zine kedalam kontekstual horror. Bahwa sesungguhnya penulisnya ingin membangkitkan kembali Mellon Zine, dan konsep-konsep hidup kembali, kebangkitan yang telah mati, zombie atau hantu seringali ditemui dalam konsep horror. Jadi, tendensi "SEQUEL" sebagai bangkitnya sesuatu yang telah mati secara murahan ada pada hal-hal seperti itu.

Tidak ada korelasi khusus antara judul dan konsep "SEQUEL!" dengan karya-karya yang dirangkum dalam MTDS #1 ini. Karena judul "SEQUEL!" hanyalah ego dari penulis saja untuk bagaimana ia mengemas digital set ini.

Dan dengan mudah dalam MTDS #1 bisa ditemukan lagu dari band-band terhebat berikut: Hi Mom! (Surabaya), The Morning After (Malang), Vox (Surabaya), Hairdresser On Fire (Medan), Friday (Surabaya) dan Shorthand Phonetics (Bandung/Jakarta) dan beberapa karya grafis dari Phleg, Kuro, Puru dan titiss. The first serial of Mellon The Digital Set entitled as SEQUEL!. Following the previous Mellon Zine sarcastic dead act. As it had been vacuum for months, and never know how will it becomes in the future. So the author (Jay) literally declare Mellon Zine as dead. As Mellon Zine told as literally dead, the author suddenly found, it might be funny if he contexted its dead into a horror-esque story board. Somehow the author might be want to raise the zine after its dead. We'll easily find a resurrection, raise of the dead, or zombies, ghosts and whatsoever in anything horror. And "Sequel!" is cheapily about those kind of things. As, “we'll see the raise of the dead in the sequel of this story”. That's the very common plot!

Songs, artworks, pics / photos and any others in this digital set has nothing inline with the insight meaning of "Sequel!". The picked theme is only the author's ego in how he packed the digital set. So, let's enjoy and share this digital set. Love from the death!

They sound riotic as a punk, much like Young and Restless, (early) Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Friday si an awesome band coming From Surabaya, Indonesia. Brought a dark ambient sound scape, but hit your ass as powerful rock beat from the drum n bass. Shorthand Phonetics is a fiction solo project by Ababil Ashari, known as a lo-fi rock based genre, but very honest in tunes.

I Come to Shanghai's indie-cred doesn't come from the usual sources of the holy trinity of music blogs, (that being a concept I just came up in my noodle), that is made of of Pitchfork, Stereogum and [a web publication of your choice]. It comes from the gaming scene.

For you see, Robert Ashley of Massachusetts', one-half of this dynamic duo, initial claim to fame is a gaming podcast entitled "A Life Well Wasted". The podcast takes a "This American Life" approach to gaming journalism and is worth ALL the time it consumes out of your day.

So, as I listened to "A Life Well Wasted", I noticed that the music used in the podcast we're all, or at least mostly, original. A bit of more click-ta-tude and I found out that the music was from Robert's musical project with Sam Frigard of Texas' Californian outfit I Come to Shanghai.

Long story short, I downloaded this PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT-EVEN-ZERO album a month later and well...

I'm fucking floored.

That lone-snare-drum intro, that soft-synth explosion, that Damon Albarn-ish baritone [...] The genius that is "Pass the Time".

That laid-back guitar riff, that hyperactive background beat, that swirly synth riff [...] The heaven that is "Your Lazy Eye"

Now, the opening one-two punch would be enough hold up any other filler-stuffed indie albums (Yo!, Bombay Bicycle Club, The View! Here's looking at you!), but that's not all.

"Another Sunday Morning" is a blissful run through 3/4 time, "Houses on the Shore" is a reflection of warranted post-hippie irony with the lines "I'm giving it to the rich/Stealing from the poor/And the Devil drives a big rig/Has houses on the shore".

Even the idea-based songs is entertaining. "The Commute" seems like an exercise of spacing, forward-moving songwriting and arrangement. Album closer "Do We Have to Rise Again" through twists and turns blossoms into one of the better Radiohead-inspired tracks in recent memory.

Lyrically strong, musically engaging. Done without the slightest hint of pretension. Devastatingly recommendable!

And now a gushing schoolboy poem to end:

"I Come to Shanghai has given it to us /
this twee masterpiece.
And I Come to Shanghai has given it to us /
lovingly for free."

Mengacu pada Ababil Ashari sebagai satu-satunya pemeran dalam Shorthand Phonetics, kali ini album penuh ke 4 dari Shorthand Phonetics dilahirkan lagi dengan mudahnya oleh spesialis lo-fi rock/alternative ini. Dan kembali lagi, sebuah album lo-fi rock/punk/alternative dengan berbagai lirikal, judul dan konsepsi konteks cerita fiksi absurd hasil buah kreatif dari Ababil kembali tersedia untuk (selalu) bisa di download secara cuma-cuma. Kali ini Shorthand Phonetics melengkapi paket albumnya dengan sebuah digital booklets sederhana yang mungkin dimaksudkan sebagai direksi interpretasi dari Ababil kepada para pendengarnya. Setidaknya untuk lebih mudah memahami konteks dan konsepsi dari lagu-lagu Shorthand Phonetics. Berbentuk file-file JPEG dengan rangkaian prolog-dialog yang membentuk semacam cerita pendek sporadis, dilengkapi lirik dari setiap lagunya. Shorthand Phonetics kembali bercerita dengan gayanya yang khas, lo-fi noisy rock -kali ini sedikit pop punk- dengan setting lirikal konsisten di dunia fiksinya.

Tidak ada lagu yang benar-benar menonjol di album ini, hamper terasa merata diseluruh bagian album. Dengan sound yang juga masih dalam satu koridor, Shorthand Phonetics tidak terdengar sedang bereksperimen disini. He just wrote the songs naturally as it flows as his daily activities, maybe? Seems so. Selama perangkat rekamannya masih ada disekitarnya, terjadilah lagu-lagu itu, cling! Haha… Harus dikatakan, kali ini sound yang diusung sedikit lebih berat dan padat, entah disengaja entah tidak mengingat Shorthand Phonetics memang selalu lo-fi. Tapi beat pop-punk sedang mendominasi di album ini, dengan lengkingan suara Ababil sesekali muncul di bagian lagu.

Coba tengok ke beberapa lagu yang menggelitik telinga saya. Yr #1 In My Mind, Jenna Fischer Analogue, menggoda dengan layer distorsi diawal yang terseret-seret dengan tebalnya, dengan hentakan berisik di versenya, dilengkapi melodi lagu yang pop-punk dan mudah. Kemudian ada Starring Shinohara Yumi as Unity Telosio in SABER 2RD DESTINY: Unity No Chiryoku, dengan ketukan drum ala indie rock kekinian, driven bass picking, dan petikan senar gitar mengikuti nyanyian, disambar langsung dengan refrain yang kembali kasar dan menghajar. The Hardest Achievement hadir dengan musik yang mudah dan genjrengan gitar yang santai, suara Ababil yang tidak merdu membuat lagu ini semakin menjiwai lo-fi. Hahaha… Masih ada Picture Day yang menghadirkan versi shining sunny pop-punk dari Shorthand Phonetics.

Beberapa lagu lain menghadirkan suasana suram yang masih berisik, seperti To the Girl I Think Might Be Similar..., Don’t Worry You’ll Roll a Twenty Eventually, dan Natalies for Glasses IV. Dan jangan khawatir, judul-judul yang disebutkan diatas dipendekkan agar tidak bingung membacanya, karena seperti biasanya, Shorthand Phonetics masih membuat judul dengan kaimat panjang-panjang, dan hanya ada sedikit lagu dengan judul konvensional. Haha.. Tidak ada salahnya mengunduh rilisan ini, cuma-cuma dpersembahkan melalui Yes No Wave. Silahkan… (Jay)

The super-productive medical college boy, coming back and give a birth to his brand new album under the name of Shorthand Phonetics. Refer to Ababil Ashari as the only role player on Shorthand Phonetics, this time the 4th album by Shorthand Phonetics produced easily by the lo-fi alternative/rock specialist. And again, an album of lo-fi rock/punk/alternative sounds with its absurd fiction lyrics, song title, and context conception, available to be downloaded for free (as always). On this occasion, Shorthand Phonetics fulfilled its album with a simple digital booklets, it might be purposed as a direction from Ababil on how the listener should interpret his works. At least to make it easier to understand the context and conception he made in Shorthand Phonetics. Formed as JPEG files contain sets of prolog-dialog made it sporadic stories and with lyrics of each song from the album.  Shorthand Phonetics still told stories with its unique style, lo-fi noisy rock –a bit of pop punk this time- with its consistent fiction lyrics.

There are no a single stand up song in this album, who is really catchable at the first time of listening. Mostly even on the entire album. Each songs sound in-line with each other, Shorthand Phonetics was not setting an experiment here. He just wrote the songs naturally as it flows as his daily activities, maybe? Seems so. As long as he had his recording tools around, the songs would just set up, chrink! Haha.. I must say, that the sound brought in this album a bit heavier and dense, intended or not, I can’t predict as Shorthand Phonetics is always lo-fi. But, the pop-punk like beat, is dominating in this album, with Ababil’s screaming suddenly appear in number of parts in this Album.

Let’s take a look at several songs that catch my ear. Yr #1 in My Mind, Jenna Fischer Analogue, seduce me with layers of distortion in the intro, scratchy, thick, and with a jumbo noisy hit beat on the verse, fulfilled with easy pop-punk singing. Then there is Starring Shinohara Yumi as Unity Telosio in SABER 2RD DESTINY: Unity No Chiryoku with its nowadays indie-rock drum fill, driven bass picking, and guitar picking follow its singing, get smashed with a heavy refrain. The Hardest Achievement coming up with an easy guitar jangling, the not-so-in-tune voice by Ababil accomplished the lo-fi novelty for this song. Hahaha.. There is Picture Day who brought shining sunny pop-punk version of Shorthand Phonetics.

Another sets of songs brought up a dark-noisy nuance, as much as To the Girl I Think Might Be Similar..., Don’t Worry You’ll Roll a Twenty Eventually, dan Natalies for Glasses IV. Don’t worry, titles mentioned above were not the full title, so Shorthand Phonetics keeps his history on making a weirdo long (very long) sentences as its song title, only a couples of songs who had a normal-conventional title. "Lima Puluh Menit Untuk Dua Komposisi Dari Eksperimentalis Noise, Seek Six Sick"

Mungkin rilisan ini akan menjadi sebuah rarities, berarti wajiblah kamu untuk mendownload rilisan ini. Sebuah karya dari Seek Six Sick yang direkam pada saat penampilan mereka pada 26 Juni 2008 di Edwin's Gallery, kemang Jakarta. Ini adalah penampilan untuk membuka sebuah pameran lukisan "Rhyme of Lines" karya Ayu Arista Murti -istri Jimmy Seek Six Sick.

Ini adalah appetizer sebelum album terbaru dari Seek Six Sick pada 2009 nanti (wow!). Dan menurut deskripsi dari Yes No Wave, rekaman ini dijelaskan sebagai: proses encoding dari master rekaman yang berupa kaset membiarkan suara noise yang muncul pada gesekan pita kaset tetap ditampilkan untuk menambah atmosfir yang lo-fi pada pertunjukan tersebut sekaligus memberi kesan romantisme bagi yang sudah tidak pernah memutar pita hitam kaset.

This might be a rarities, so you must download and get this release. A work by Seek Six Sick, recorded at their performance on 26 June 2008, at Edwin's Gallery, kemang Jakarta. This performance was an opening for a paint exhibition "Rhyme of Lines"  by Ayu Arista Murti -Jimmy's wife.

This is supposed to be the appetizer before Seek Six Sick upcoming album on 2009. According the description from Yes No Wave, this recording described as: encoding process from the master record -a cassette tape-allow the noises come from tape scratch still there. Make the lo-fi nuance felt in the performance, show up on the tape, also bring a romance for whom might not experiencing a cassette tape sounds anymore.

Dalam penulisan judul rilisan, everybody loves irene (eli) selalu menuliskan satu kalimat, dan itu keren! On Second Thought, I Might Wanna Change Some Things, 2nd album yang diliris pada tanggal 8 bulan 8 tahun 2008, menjadi soundtrack saya dalam mengenang perjalanan tragis menawan saya di Bali akhir Agustus kemarin… Setelah track 10, saya akan menekan tombol play lagi seperti novel Roald Dahl yang saya nikmati berulang-ulang. Pesan yang saya dapat adalah, setragis apapun hidupmu selalu akan ada harapan dan kasih karunia Tuhan lebih besar daripada penderitaanmu!

Why I love eli and their 2nd album? Pertama, saya pengagum local female vocalist yang berkarakter seperti, Tika, Dita Santamonica, Arina Mocca, Risa Homogenic, dan Irene Yohanna pastinya! Kedua, J. Vanco menjadi music producer/engineer untuk album kedua mereka. Ketiga, saya menyukai karya fotografi Oxalis di cover album ini. Keempat, saya mendapatkan album ini tepat saat saya dalam masa pemulihan atas trauma yang saya alami baru-baru ini dan saya menyukai seluruh lagunya! Berikut ini sedikit pemaknaan dan potongan lirik dari 10 track-nya!

Track 1, No One Here’s Alone, eli membawa saya menjauh dari kekelaman malam jiwa, suatu situasi yang mempertanyakan keberadaan Tuhan. We all live and will die so don’t you cry! Track 2, Rindu merupakan single dan daur ulang lagu milik Planet Bumi (saya belum mendengar versi aslinya), satu-satunya track berbahasa Indonesia dan instrumen violin di track ini menambah kekelaman jiwa saya! Track 3, Magical Box, a circle of life yang juga saya alami. Now, I’m 24, and my soul was sold! Track 4, Blood in a Rush, a song full of love and lust, and let’s make out hahaha. Track 5, The Big Bang Prophecy, duet Yudhi dan Irene, suatu anthem bagi kaum marginal yang muak dengan capitalism, facism, and racism! Let’s build a new world of utopia! The Big Bang Prophecy juga diadaptasi menjadi cerpen (salah satu cara promosi mereka).

Track 6, Architect, saya suka lagu ini tapi saya tidak bisa mendeskripsikan. You don’t know me and what I do! saya perlu mengambil kuliah antropologi arsitektur sepertinya! Track 7, Solitude Dialogue, saya suka bagian chorus dengan choir nya, I say hey be in love be alive and when there’s no hope tears won’t help to survive! Track 8, Love Is So Strange, eli menambahkan instrument perkusi dan membuat saya kembali berada di tepi pantai pasir putih pada malam hari yang penuh bintang dan suara ombak jelas terdengar! No one explain, coz love is so strange! Track 9, Ecstasy, lagu untuk kelas pekerja, nine to five, what a life to survive, but I don’t need weed and ecstasy! Track 10, Pit, meskipun ini track terakhir, but not a happy ending song, karena hidup adalah menikmati penderitaan. Its gloomy everywhere, I only sit and stare!

Saya akan merekomendasikan eli sebagai pengisi soundtrack kepada Quentin Tarantino untuk film-filmnya. Saya juga akan merekomendasikan eli kepada teman-teman saya yang mencintai Portishead and Cocteau Twins! Terberkatilah Irene (vox), Yudhi (electric/acoustic guitar/vox), Dimas (bass), Aul (synth/hammonds/rhodes), dan Adi (drums).

In the title of their releases, everybody loves Irene (eli) always write down a sentence, and that’s cool! On Second Thought, I Might Wanna Change Some Things, their 2nd album, released at 8 August 2008 (08-08-08) had been my soundtrack in memorizing my tragically wonderful journey at Bali, in the end of last August. After track 10, I’ll switch on play button again, just like Roald Dahl’s novel that I read repeatedly. The message that I got is, even you have the most tragic life, there’s always a hope and love from God, that bigger then your sorrow!

Why I love eli and their 2nd album? First, I am the fans of local female vocalist that have such character like TIka, Dita Santamonica, Arina Mocca, Risa Homogenic, and absolutely Irene Yohanna! Second, J. Vanco is the music producer/engineer in this album. Third, I love Oxalis’s photography in the cover art. Fourth, I got this album in my recovery time for the traumatic after a tragic moment just yet, and I love all the songs in the album! Below are some my descriptions and part of lyric of the whole ten songs of the album, by me.

Track 1, No One Here’s Alone, eli fly me away from the darkness night of my soul, a situation that questioning the existence of God. We all live and will die so don’t you cry! Track 2, Rindu is a recycle from Planet Bumi’s original song. I haven’t heard the original song yet. The only Indonesian language song in the album, and the violin sound, made my soul darkened. Track 3, Magical Box, a circle of life that happen to me too. Now, I’m 24, and my soul was sold! Track 4, Blood in a Rush, a song full of love and lust, and let’s make out hahaha. Track 5, The Big Bang Prophecy, duet by Yudhi and Irene, anthem for marginal peoples, that’s sick with capitalism, facism and racism! Let’s build a new world of utopia! They made a short-story from The Big Bang Prophecy, also been used as their promo-kit though.

Track 6, Architect, I love this song, but I couldn’t describe it. You don’t know me and what I do! I think I need to take a course about anthropology architecture. Track 7, Solitude Dialogue, I love the chorus with the choir in it, I say hey be in love be alive and when there’s no hope tears won’t help to survive! Track 8, Love Is So Strange, eli added percussion as the instrument, and made me fly again on the white sand beside the beach in the night, full of stars, and the wave sound so clear. No one explain, coz love is so strange! Track 9, Ecstasy, a song for working class, nine to five, what a life to survive, but I don’t need weed and ecstasy! Track 10, Pit, the last song, but it’s not a happy ending song, because, life is to enjoy your sorrow. Its gloomy everywhere, I only sit and stare!

I would recommend eli as a music for soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino movies. I will also recommend eli to my friends that love Portishead and Cocteau Twins! God bless Irene (vox), Yudhi (electric/acoustic guitar/vox), Dimas (bass), Aul (synth/hammonds/rhodes), and Adi (drums).
