Dr. Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation
Author: Olivia Judson
Category: Non-Fiction (Science)
Publisher: Metropolitan Books
Language: English
Reviewer: Kat
Collection available at C2O Library

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Applying hilariously exaggerated anthropomorphic slants, in this book Olivia Judson creates her own Dr. Tatiana, the sex advice column aunt agony to all sorts of sexually frustrated, confused creatures. With this framework, she present an informative and entertaining tour of the interesting evolutionary biology of sex.

The columns are grouped in thirteen chapters, each focusing on certain themes (female’s promiscuousity, wooing expenses, how to win if you’re a loser, cannibalism, violence, “sneaky” devices, homosexuality, extreme rarity of monogamy, incest, “gender-bending” and its variants, hermaphrodite, asexuality) to then further compiled as three parts. Each column typically begins with a question, for example

Dear Dr. Tatiana,

I’ve heard it’s going to take me three weeks to make just one sperm. Apparently this is because it’s going to need a tail twenty times longer than my body. This seems awfully unfair. I’m just a little fruit fly, Drosophila bifurca. Can’t I get a prosthesis?

Waiting for Sperm in Ohio

And Dr. Tatiana would reply chattily:

There’s no market in artificial sperm tails: you’re going to have to make them yourself. You’re right — it’s not fair. Why should a fruit fly three milimeters long — smaller than this dash — have to make sperm that measure fifty-eight milimeters? A human is far bigger than you, but gets away with sperm one thousand times smaller. Indeed, if a man were to make a sperm on your scale, it would be as long as a blue whale. Now, that I’d like to see.

And that’s just one of the small samples. Dr Tatiana would give you a tour of similar or related problems in other species (”The Giant Sperm Hall of Fame contains a diverse scattering of animals”), exploring detailed information on the biology of sex with entertaining wit that is never pushed at the expense of information nor enjoyment.

The book doesn’t assume a background in biology, and at the end of the book ample, thorough notes are provided for those interested in furthe (more technical) readings. Well-written, as entertaining as it is informative, a must-read if you snored through your high-school biology.

Discovery Channel created a three-part musical documentary as a company to this book.

Instead of the book’s sassy sex advice columnist (who’d put whatsername of that Sex and the City to shame), Olivia Judson appears in the doco as a leggy, white-leather-clad Dr Tatiana the sexpert consultant, riding along in her Mustang for her research, consoling all-dancing, all-singing, hanky-panky creatures (”from frustrated fruit flies to lovelorn golden pottos”).

While the show is also divided into three parts, it does not proceed in the same order as the book. The first part of the documentary gives “a sketch of the battlefield”, glimpses through the weird, troubled wild world of animal sex: hermaphrodite banana slugs that chew their penises after copulation (”post-coital cigarettes”), button beetles eating her son after she has sex with him, an asexual bdelloid rotifier causing a riot a la Jerry-Springer show, and a whole array of very colourful shenanigans.

The second part focuses on females, more strumpets than saints, e.g. a chastity belt in the form of exploding penis left inside queen bee’s genital, girls being picky, lured with gifts and physical attractions, aggression in females, while the last part shows the length boys would go to stop the females from sleeping around (penis with thistles, nobbles and spikes (some girls are just so lucky!), aphrodisiacs, offering of oneself as a snack), what to do if you’re a “poor, ugly wimp” (be a sneak or join a gang).

Not as information-packed as the book of course, but very entertaining nevertheless, and the visuals and costumes are actually quite imaginative. The songs, like most musicals out there, can get a bit too much and draggy (some songs I wish weren’t as long), but hey, I can just imagine just for once the full, undivided attention from high school students on this doco.

At Five in the Afternoon.

Dalam bukunya Close Up: Iranian Cinema, Past, Present, Future, Hamid Dabashi bahkan menyatakan karya Samira menggebrak pretensi karya-karya “old masters” Iran, termasuk Dariush Mehrjui, Abbas Kiarostami, dan ayahnya sendiri, Mohsen Makhmalbaf.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Kurdistan, the border between Iran and Iraq, a band of teachers are trudging through a barren area, seemingly without directions, each with a rickety blackboard on their back like useless, clumsy wings. Even though the atmosphere is pessimistic, there are plenty of (black,) deadpanned humour colouring this film.

In the midst of this heartless desert, with their “students” — smugglers and nomads — worrying more about their life, uninterested in the supposedly higher calling of “education” and “culture”, their “virtuous” endeavour becomes futile, even ridiculous. “Education”, or “culture” — especially the non-oral (reading & writing) — is reduced into a yet another useless commodity. The usual cliches for the value of education becomes no different from any other cheap sales cajoling.

Saïd offers his guiding service to a group of nomads trying to return to their homeland to die, and his blackboard is turned into a carrier for an old man as well as a dowry for the old man’s daughter. With ingenious, satirical nonchalance, the wife indifferently waits for her son to piss during the ceremony (while her own father is having painful difficulties pissing). She pays no attention to Saïd’s attempts to teach her some writings and readings, let alone to sleep with her. The last scene of this film — where they divorced and the wife walked away with the blackboard dowry — bores indelible impressions.

Like many other Iranian New Wave (or perhaps Poetic Realism, if you like), this film used non-professional actors, hand-held cameras and minimum budget, creating a film that blurs the line between fiction and documentary, yet also brimming with poetic images. At the age of 18 Samira became the youngest director ever participated in the international Cannes Film Festival with her debut The Apple. After winning the Jury Prize in Cannes 2000 with Blackboards, in 2003, she again won the Jury Prize with At Five in the Afternoon.

Although many sceptics initially dismissed The Apple as no more than the work and influence of her famouse father, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, with Blackboards Samira showed herself as a talented filmmaker in her own right. In his book Close Up: Iranian Cinema, Past, Present, Future, Hamid Dabashi even declared that Samira cuts through the pretensions that plagued the “overbloated” “old masters” of Iran, including Dariush Mehrjui, Abbas Kiarostami, and her own father, Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Agreed or not, you definitely have to see them for yourself.

"It’s Pretty Hard to Carry Off Cheerful Lyrics Without Being Annoying Anyway"
-Carey Lander of Camera Obscura-

Camera Obscura

Get Out of This Country nya banyak dipuji diseluruh dunia. God bless the internet, and may peaceful come to MySpace. Hahaha... Thanks to Carey! So, Let's get out of this prelude, and read the interview!

Hai Camera Obscura, apa kabar?
Halo, ini Carey.

Dengan nama Camera Obscura, apakah kalian suka fotografi? Lomografi mungkin?

Beberapa tahun lewat setelah ”Let’s Get Out of This Country”, apa yang kalian lakukan sekarang?
Kami masih sibuk tur keliling dunia.

Apa pendapat kalian tentang sambutan orang-orang pada album ”Let’s Get Out of This Country”?
Get Out of This Country.

Tempat apa yang kalian maksud dalam “Let’s get Out of This Country"?

Dan saya sangat suka lirik Tears for Affairs

Kadang kami merasa takjub. Lalu kami ingat.

Bagaimana rasa buahnya?
Anggur. Nanti buah anggur akan berubah menjadi red wine.

Bagaimana keadaan scene musik Glasgow sekarang? Musik seperti apa yang ramai disana?
Sangat baik.

Ugh. Dan sebotol gin setengah memabukkan.

Bagaimana menurut kalian, berbagi MP3 lewat internet?

Carey xx

Camera Obscura

A-ha, I've just had a nice chance, to done an interview with Camera Obscura. Yes, that indiepop band from Scotland, whose their album, Let's Get Out of This Country have been praised widely on the globe. God bless the internet, and may peaceful come to MySpace. Hahaha... Okay, this is just an by-email interview, but at least Carey Lander (Piano, Organ, Vocals) had been very nice to spare her time to correspondence with me and answer the interview. Thanks to Carey! So, let's get out of this prelude, and read the interview!

Hi Camera Obscura, how it's going there?
Hello, this is Carey. Nice to meet you.

Under the name of Camera Obscura, are you guys into photography? Lomography maybe? ;D
Not in any qualified way. I think we just use the name to make ourselves seem more arty and pretentious.

It's been years after the release of "Let's Get Out of This Country", what are you guys doing right now?
We have been busy touring the world. Sadly we didn’t make it to Asia before now but we are looking forward to our first visit.

Are you planning to record some new songs or album right now?
We have finished recording and mixing the new album. We recorded in Sweden again and its sounding great.

What do you think about peoples thought on the album "Let's Get Out of This Country" (It's been rated quite good achievement for your bands, isn’t it)?
I think we were extremely relieved to get a good response from critics for Let’s Get Out of This Country. We were really proud of it and it was great to be finally making some sort of good impression on people.

What place that you mentioned in the song "Let's Get Out of This Country"? Why are you seems so unhappy with this place?
It’s not really about a specific place. It’s more about yourself and wherever you call home, feeling frustrated with yourself and your life and longing for something different.

Do you want to move out from Glasgow? ;D
Not right now although one of the privileges of traveling is fantasizing about living a different life in the amazing places you visit.

Do you enjoy traveling around the world by touring as a band? How was it feels?
It can be very difficult being away from home and coping with the practicalities of traveling but it’s been really amazing for us. I would never have had these experiences without the band. It’s really nice meeting so many people in the pleasant circumstance of them liking your music.

Which place that you ever visit, do you like the most? Why?
There hasn’t really been anywhere I haven’t enjoyed so far and one of the best things is the difference between places and the chance to experience the unfamiliar. I do really enjoy touring in America because there are lots of vintage stores to buy clothes and lots of book shops but I’m really looking forward to something a little more adventurous in Asia.

Do you have any favorite place do you want to visit?
Anywhere we haven’t been of course. I have to say, I really love the winter and I’d like to do some more snowy tours. I just watched a TV programme about the northern lights in Norway. I’d love to go there or to Iceland or something.

Most of your songs telling about sad, unhappy -negative- story, although some of them with a bright-fun song arrangement. Did you try to make this sad-unhappy-story telling as a kind of identity of the bands? Or it's just a coincidence?
I think it’s something that comes naturally to us. Tracyanne’s lyrics are often quite sad and introspective but we don’t feel that that has to limit our musical palette. I think the contrast can work well in music. I think it’s pretty hard to carry off cheerful lyrics without being annoying anyway.

As this far, which Camera Obscura's song or lyric is your favorite? Why? (You may answer this personally, of course each of you have different favor ;D)
My favorite lyric from the first album Biggest Bluest Hi-fi is “I’m softer than my face would suggest” which sums up Tracyanne pretty well. And I really love the lyrics to Tears for Affairs.

If looks could really kill, what would happen to Camera Obscura? Who will be killed? ;D
I think we’re generally angriest with ourselves so we’d probably have some sort of self-harming accident.

Camera Obscura have been exist for a decade, what make you guys still play and make music at this point?
Sometimes we wonder. But then we remember. It’s because despite all the aspects of trying to live out being in a band that are difficult, the feeling of putting together new music and hearing it back is amazing and fulfilling. Also the buzz of a good gig is pretty hard to beat.

Do you ever feel stuck at making and playing music? How?
Yes. Once you’ve made one album it becomes like a business and you try to stay afloat. Suddenly there are pressures and commitments and targets. We generally avoid the business aspect of music as much as possible but it shapes the way the band go forward. However it also creates pressure and this can be a good thing otherwise we might never get anything done. When you know you have to put together songs for a new record it can feel pretty terrifying but once you get started, the confidence comes back a little.

What will you guys do if Camera Obscura was never exist?
I don’t know. I guess we wouldn’t all be such good friends which would be pretty sad. It’s a pretty horrible. There have been so many good experiences and things to be proud of.

What is the best and the worst things, being a decade together in a band?
The worst thing is, having to fly so often. Some of the band are quite afraid of it and some of us just hate it. Luckily the good things outweigh it by a couple of airmiles.

Do you guys usually listen to musical trend, or you just listen to what are you favor to?
As you can probably imagine, we are about as fashionable with our musical tastes as we are with our clothes. The British media has pretty terrible taste in music so far as I can see but there is plenty of contemporary music that we love. At the moment we are a bit excited about Glasvegas from Glasgow who are being totally hyped up but are actually pretty good.

Is it listening-habit influencing how do you produce music?
Our music and how it sounds is influenced a lot by older records that we love from the 50s 60s 70s. We love the way they sound and we like to borrow something from that music but we also want to create our own sound and reference the modern music that we love.

At the first time, is the musical direction of the band just the same like its sounds now?
The band has evolved. You learn as you go along as improve as musicians. We’ve been working with brilliant producer Jari Haapaleinen on Let’s Get Out and on the new album and he’s really helped us turn our sound into something special.

A decade with 3 LP, it's not quite productive amount in the industry. Do you guys rate your musical activity as your main job, or just a hobby?
Of course music is more than a hobby to us. It always has been but we have only been able to be fulltime musicians or a brief period because we can’t afford it. This has slowed our productivity to some extent but also the band needed to time to develop between records. Also you have to put the time in to tour a record.

What do you think the main distinctive difference between Indie and Major music industry?
I’ve never been on a major label so I don’t really know but it doesn’t appeal to me much.

Which one do you prefer from the two mentioned above?
It depends whether you’re talking about on a personal level or not. There’s no point criticising all major labels. You’ve got to be a pretty huge company to be able to distribute Beatles records or Michael Jackson albums but smaller bands who are never going to have a mass market need labels to meet their needs too.

If Camera Obscura is a kind of fruit, what would it be? What flavor will be the taste of the fruit?
Grapes. Once they’ve been turned into red wine.

How is the Glasgow music scene figure right now? What kind of music that majoring in there?
It seems pretty good as ever. Glasvegas are the new big thing and Franz Ferdinand have a new album coming out. It’s a brilliant place to be.

Are there many bands in Glasgow sounds -more or less- like Camera Obscura? Which bands?
Not so many in Glasgow but we have stumbled across some that seem somewhat influenced like us. It’s a bit weird.

Are there many new bands or less recognized bands in your environment, that do you think peoples should pay more attention to them? Then which bands?
We just played with a band called The Beep Seals from Manchester, England. I’m right into them at the moment.

Tell me the worst food or drink you ever ate in the tour?
Probably our own rider when we’ve put in nasty filthy dressing rooms with no fridges. Sweaty cold meat and cheese. Ugh. And a bottle of half drunk gin once…

What do you think of MP3 song sharing through the internet? Is that a violent behavior toward musician, or is that the future of the music industry?
I think illegally downloading whole albums is pretty bad. I think it’s fair enough to maybe get a song to find out if you like the artist but when there are so many bands struggling to make any money from music, it’s pretty sad that people who consider themselves music fans feel free to help themselves.

Any plan for Camera Obscura to visiting Asia, or maybe Indonesia (ever heard Indonesia? ;D)?
We’re about to embark on a short Asian tour and I’m pretty hopeful we’ll be able to play some shows in Indonesia when the new album comes out. Lots of people write to us from there, we appreciate it and we would love to play for you some time.

Okay, please make a shout out for the readers. Thank you very much Camera Obscura, warm regards from Indonesia!
Hello readers. Thank you for reading. Thank you for supporting the band and we promise we’ll make it over there some time…

On Second Thought, I Might Wanna Change Some Things, 2nd album yang diliris pada tanggal 8 bulan 8 tahun 2008, menjadi soundtrack saya dalam mengenang perjalanan tragis menawan saya di Bali akhir Agustus kemarin…

Why I love eli and their 2nd album?

Track 1, No One Here’s Alone, eli membawa saya menjauh dari kekelaman malam jiwa, suatu situasi yang mempertanyakan keberadaan Tuhan. We all live and will die so don’t you cry! Track 3, Magical Box, a circle of life yang juga saya alami. Now, I’m 24, and my soul was sold! Track 4, Blood in a Rush, a song full of love and lust, and let’s make out hahaha. Track 5, The Big Bang Prophecy, duet Yudhi dan Irene, suatu anthem bagi kaum marginal yang muak dengan capitalism, facism, and racism! Let’s build a new world of utopia! The Big Bang Prophecy juga diadaptasi menjadi cerpen (salah satu cara promosi mereka).

You don’t know me and what I do! saya perlu mengambil kuliah antropologi arsitektur sepertinya! Track 7, Solitude Dialogue, saya suka bagian chorus dengan choir nya, I say hey be in love be alive and when there’s no hope tears won’t help to survive! Track 8, Love Is So Strange, eli menambahkan instrument perkusi dan membuat saya kembali berada di tepi pantai pasir putih pada malam hari yang penuh bintang dan suara ombak jelas terdengar! No one explain, coz love is so strange! Track 9, Ecstasy, lagu untuk kelas pekerja, nine to five, what a life to survive, but I don’t need weed and ecstasy! Track 10, Pit, meskipun ini track terakhir, but not a happy ending song, karena hidup adalah menikmati penderitaan. Its gloomy everywhere, I only sit and stare!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the title of their releases, everybody loves Irene (eli) always write down a sentence, and that’s cool! On Second Thought, I Might Wanna Change Some Things, their 2nd album, released at 8 August 2008 (08-08-08) had been my soundtrack in memorizing my tragically wonderful journey at Bali, in the end of last August. After track 10, I’ll switch on play button again, just like Roald Dahl’s novel that I read repeatedly. The message that I got is, even you have the most tragic life, there’s always a hope and love from God, that bigger then your sorrow!

Why I love eli and their 2nd album? First, I am the fans of local female vocalist that have such character like TIka, Dita Santamonica, Arina Mocca, Risa Homogenic, and absolutely Irene Yohanna! Second, J. Vanco is the music producer/engineer in this album. Third, I love Oxalis’s photography in the cover art. Fourth, I got this album in my recovery time for the traumatic after a tragic moment just yet, and I love all the songs in the album! Below are some my descriptions and part of lyric of the whole ten songs of the album, by me.

Track 1, No One Here’s Alone, eli fly me away from the darkness night of my soul, a situation that questioning the existence of God. We all live and will die so don’t you cry! Track 2, Rindu is a recycle from Planet Bumi’s original song. I haven’t heard the original song yet. The only Indonesian language song in the album, and the violin sound, made my soul darkened. Track 3, Magical Box, a circle of life that happen to me too. Now, I’m 24, and my soul was sold! Track 4, Blood in a Rush, a song full of love and lust, and let’s make out hahaha. Track 5, The Big Bang Prophecy, duet by Yudhi and Irene, anthem for marginal peoples, that’s sick with capitalism, facism and racism! Let’s build a new world of utopia! They made a short-story from The Big Bang Prophecy, also been used as their promo-kit though.

Track 6, Architect, I love this song, but I couldn’t describe it. You don’t know me and what I do! I think I need to take a course about anthropology architecture. Track 7, Solitude Dialogue, I love the chorus with the choir in it, I say hey be in love be alive and when there’s no hope tears won’t help to survive! Track 8, Love Is So Strange, eli added percussion as the instrument, and made me fly again on the white sand beside the beach in the night, full of stars, and the wave sound so clear. No one explain, coz love is so strange! Track 9, Ecstasy, a song for working class, nine to five, what a life to survive, but I don’t need weed and ecstasy! Track 10, Pit, the last song, but it’s not a happy ending song, because, life is to enjoy your sorrow. Its gloomy everywhere, I only sit and stare!

I would recommend eli as a music for soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino movies. I will also recommend eli to my friends that love Portishead and Cocteau Twins! God bless Irene (vox), Yudhi (electric/acoustic guitar/vox), Dimas (bass), Aul (synth/hammonds/rhodes), and Adi (drums).

"Andri Menggesekkan Gergaji Pada Senar Gitarnya, What A Noise!"

Andri Manual; in Diana

Title: Sundaytronik
Place: The Wave, Kuta, Bali
Date : 31 Agustus 2008
Entry: 25k include beer
Report by: Tinta the Gig Travelers

Heran juga anak-anak Kuta bikin indiepop gig, you know Kuta Rock City (Jerinx cs)! gig ini diorganisir Futurica Inc sekaligus promo album terbarunya Oh Nina!

The Wave berada tepat di depan Pantai Kuta, yeah cozy club in the beautiful spot! Saat masuk club, saya disambut 2 track terakhir dari Godard, duo 8bit, and they are true chip tuner, mereka memakai game console! What a joy sound! Armada Racun berformasikan 2 basses, 1 keyboardist, 1 drummer (tanpa gitar sama seperti Zoo), saya melihat Nadya yang juga keyboardist Risky Summerbee and The Honeythief, dan drummer Southern Beach Terror as add player.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Armada Racun; in Diana

This is my first gig journey to Bali, and the craziest journey I ever had. My friend was right told me that I’m a gig-goers and that is a great escape! I quite wondering, Kuta kids bring up an indiepop gigs, you know the words, Kuta Rock City (Jerinx –the drummer of Superman Is Dead an influencing punk band in Bali- and friends)! This gig organized by Futurica Inc also for promoting newest Oh Nina! album, EPPI SPACE CREATURE: ZAAPP...!!! And also performing another bands from YK (ARMADA RACUN, DAS MUSTANG, AMNESIAC SYNDROME), Solo (CARMENT), SBY (MANUAL), BALI (GODARD, NINE FOLDS, THREESIXONE ft SUTHA, MOBSCENE) with entry ticketing at 25k include beer!

Because something terrible happen to me, I came to the venue, The Wave, at 23.00 and had passed many bands! The Wave placed right in front of Kuta Beach, yeah cozy club in the beautiful spot! God blessed me, Manual had not played yet, and I’m not passing the best part of the gig! When I stepped inside, I got two tracks form Godard, a 8-bit duo, and they are a true chip-tuner, they use a game console! What a joy sound! I knew Godard, because they were appeared in a compilation released by Shining Records, Chiptown 16:2 bit 14 in 1 compilation! Next performer is Armada Racun. One crazy band that poisoned rock music! They are in a contract with Lil’Fish Records and shall release their first album at 2009. Armada Racun lined up with 2 basses, 1 keyboard, 1 drum (without guitar, just like Zoo), I saw Nadya who is also keyboardist of Risky Summerbee and The Honeythief and the Southern Beach Terror drummer as additional player. Vred (bass and voc) who wear a shirt printed Basquiat, deathly bring three songs. I only could remember the one titled Amerika.. An irony about capitalism and the YK kids did sing-a-long!

The next is the band that made me bold to cross Bali strait three times in a night. Manual, the noise band, that could made the audience in silence and stunned! They only appear two-headed that night, without Alibaba. Jeffry in words, poetry, kids toy, typewriter, radio, pieces of zinc, gravels, bottle filled with marbles and Andri on guitar and voices! They showed three composition, two new songs, and one old song that the MP3 files already distributed. The first is, Your Is Mine, I think the sound still not kicking yet, so, noises from scratched zinc and gravels not really in-tune. But I still amazed with their new materials and (non) instruments. The second, is also a new one, Keakuan, Jeffry read a poetry inspired by his friend artwork titled Masturbasi Ego! The last, Tanda Seru, is a composition that is quite friendly for me. A sweet closing. Mostly when Andri scratch his guitar with a saw. What a noise!

The last performer was Oh Nina! Khrisna (gitar&synth) and Auf (voc&synth) experienced some problem in their sound, twice in their starting. And it is quite annoying. Beside brought songs from their newest album, they also covered a national anthem, Tanah Airku (I’m not really sure about the title) and Bitter Sweet Symphony from The Verve! Oh Nina! ends the show with its peaceful harmony. And the a peer group from YK that brought a bus with 25 seats, get ready to get home, and take a bit rest in an American fast food restaurant, Indonesian pride! Like Armada Racun said, we are one nation, American!

We could see, the climax is on Manual, and Sundaytronik is their first gig after a year in vacuum.
