"You Lose Control When You're on a Major Label. Independent Labels Seem to Have More Respect for Music Than Money!"

Actually, i did this interview long ago just before Camera Obscura came to Indonesia (oh, what a great show to recall :D). So, i think this interview better be shared here, than i keep this in my mail inbox. Some question might be correlated to the interview taken time. Might not too relevant with current event. well, enjoy this Q&A

Q: Finally you are going to show in Indonesia! that's super greattt!!! what made you come to Indonesia?
A: We have obviously never been to Indonesia before but were very aware that we had a lot of fans from there. Because of the internet you can get in touch with a band immediately. When we announced the Indonesia shows there were so many messages on our website that we knew it was going to be fun....and it certainly was.

Q: It's your first show in Indonesia, what do you expect from here?
A: We did not know what to expect at all as none of us knew too much about the country. We did know that there were a lot of people excited that we were coming over. That is definitely what happened. We felt the love!

Q: Know anything about Indonesia? from the news, internet, or anything.... music from Indonesia maybe?
A: I did know that Indonesia was made up of many islands and I was also listening to a compilation on the Sublime Frequencies label called Radio Sumatra. I had also heard some music by the 60's singer Christina!

Q: A lot of people here want to see your show, and feel very super excited about it. Anything special you gonna brought on the show?
A: I think because we knew that people were so excited that it made us feel very excited also. We also played some older songs that we never usually play also.

Q: So far, are there any difference between audiences in europe and asia?
A: Europe is so varied that even within it audiences are different. Indonesians were definitely among the most enthusiastic!

Q: Do you aware your coming to Indonesia is at the same time with Barrack Obama arrival in Indonesia too? Haha, Camera Obscura is not into politic anyway, isn't it?
A: We missed him! He came after us. Some of the band are into political thinking more than others but I'd have to say that we are all very liberal minded people who believe that all people are worthy of basic human rights.

Q: Do you aware the event you are going to play in Indonesia is an indie festival competition show? What do you think about the term 'indie' to be competed in music manner? Is indie over hyped here?
A: I think that Independent music is important, more in spirit than merely labeling yourself as an "indie" band. Independent labels are more creatively exciting and musician friendly.

Q: You know, a lot of your fans wishing your show in Indonesia is not in the indie competition show, but a single show of Camera Obscura, so it will be more intense communication between you and your fans. What do you feel about it? Possibly happen someday?
A: We would LOVE to come back to Indonesia and play our own shows. That would be very exciting for us. We still enjoyed the 2 shows we did play very much.

Q: A lot of bands in Indonesia (especially indie bands) were influenced by Camera Obscura and another British indie pop acts. And those bands will be your audiences in Indonesia. what do you feel about it?
A: We feel very excited about that. We never think of ourselves as being influential but it is flattering to think that we could inspire other people to make music.

Q: Okay now about your newest album, My Maudlin Career. How is the respond so far? is it a success?
A: I think the fact that we have been invited to play in Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand and other places we haven't been to before is a positive sign that the album has been a success. Our fan base is always getting bigger and people from all over the world email us, so yes, a success....I think.

Q: It is Carey Lander painted on the cover of My Maudlin Career? it's like her anyway :)
A: Oh yes.

Q: I was curious about Other Town in My Maudlin Career. It's much or less sounds like Country Mile from Let's Get Out of This Country.Don't you think so?
A: I think they both have very different feelings to them. Country Mile has a lot more noise in it whereas Other Towns is a lot more stripped back. I think they are different, for sure.

Q: I would say that My Maudlin Career is Let's Get Out of this Country in a more detailed, and enriched work. What do you think if you compare those two albums?
A: I think that's partly true. I think the new album is an extension of LGOOTC in a way. There are no massive musical departures. More a refinement of our current sound.

Q; French navy and Honey in the Sun are my fave from My Maudlin Career. The mood made from the song are bright, and energetic but still twisting emotions with the notation. What do you guys feel about those two songs?
A: Well they're a bit more tiring to play live than something like Country Mile but that's just cos we're getting really old! :) They are fun to play and we always feel that we put energy into those songs, it makes for a nice contrast to the slower stuff.

Q: In My Maudlin Career, which song do you think the best song from the album?
A: Too hard to pick one.

Q: Any new songs already after My Maudlin Career? Maybe composed between your tour around the globe?
A: We are finishing a tour of the US in June and then we will start working on new songs after we have a wee break.

Below is some fans questions:
by. Kaka Jully Soeharto
Q: I want to ask! How could Camera Obscura made a hooked single in the song Books Written For Girls. Any story behind the song? I am crying for the song! It's so me!
A: I think that there is pessimism and there is insecurity in that song. Most people can relate to that for sure.

Q: I like your wardrobe very much, any favourite fashion designer? Or you customized your wardrobe by yourself?
A: We are crazy for second hand and vintage clothes. I don't think anyone has a favourite designer, we just sort of make it up as we go.

Q: Camera Obscura under 4AD Records really pleased us as fans, what do you feel about 4AD?
A: They're a great label and pretty much everyone in the band loves records from 4AD. The Cocteau Twins are a big influence on Tracyanne for instance.

by. Denan Bagus
Q: Camera Obscura do you ever thought about going in major label?
A: Not really. You lose control when you're on a major label. Independent labels seem to have more respect for music than money!

Q: Any of you guys, might be love photography?
A: Not really. No one in the band is in any way a keen photographer.

by. Kokoh Wardoyo
Q: What is Camera Obscura best song? why?
A: Ah! Too hard man! I definitely prefer the last 2 records to the earlier ones. Everyone has a different favourite.

Q: In studio while rehearsal songs, any difference between personal in arranging song? How do you anticipate that?
A: Usually, Tracyanne has a bit of a song, a melody, some words and sometimes she has the whole song. From there, the whole band works towards the finished song. We all try different things until we get something that works. Working with a Jari (the producer) also means that he will also have ideas as to how a song should sound or be played.

Q: What is your purpose on playing music?
A: I don't if there is a real purpose. Playing music is great for self expression. We also get to travel a lot and meet lot's of nice people, it's a good life.

Q: Camera Obscura, any intention to change your name into Camera Pinhole or SLR Camera? So it might sounds more hi-tech :p
A: God no! We are far too old fashioned!
